Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the Oregon Wellness Program?

A: The Oregon Wellness Program (OWP) offers in-person and telehealth counseling to health care professionals across the state of Oregon. All OWP-affiliated mental health providers are licensed and credentialed clinicians, who are highly experienced in working with health care professionals.

Q: Who is eligible to receive counseling services through the Oregon Wellness Program (OWP)?

A: In addition to Oregon CNAs, LPNs, and RNs at select sites, OWP counseling services continue to be available to Oregon dentists, physicians, physician assistants, podiatrists, LaCs, DPMs, well as APRNs (nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetists, nurse-midwives, and clinical nurse specialists).

Since 2018, the OWP has covered the cost of counseling for physicians, physician assistants, advanced practice providers, nurse practitioners, and most recently, dentists thanks to agreements with the Central Oregon Medical Society, the Marion-Polk County Medical Society, the Lane County Medical Society, and the Medical Society of Metropolitan Portland (MSMP).

In 2022, through funding with the Oregon State Board of Nursing, OWP has expanded to serve RNs, LPNs, and CNAs.

Q: When will all Oregon health care professionals be eligible to participate in OWP?

A: In addition to Oregon RNs, LPNs, and CNAs at select sites, OWP counseling services continue to be available to physicians, physician assistants, advanced practice providers, nurse practitioners, and dentists.

We anticipate expanding the program to nurses across the state of Oregon by the end of 2022. Continued program expansion is dependent upon additional funding and partnerships.

We hope to offer OWP services to more health care professionals in 2023.

Q: How much experience do OWP affiliated providers have working with health care professionals?

A: Providers in the OWP network have 5-10 years of direct experience providing counseling services to health care professionals.

Q: How do I request an appointment?

A: Patients can request and schedule appointments directly with OWP affiliated providers. Call 541-242-2805 or visit our Counseling page to find a list of participating providers.

Q: How soon can I get an appointment?

A: Appointment scheduling is up to the discretion of each provider, however, our aim is for patients to be scheduled within three business days of their first appointment request. Some participating providers will have more availability than others. We recommend selecting two or three providers to reach out to in case your first choice isn’t able to see you right away.

Q: If I make use of this program, will it be reported to my insurance / boards etc.?

A: No. There is no “paper trail” for patients who see a provider through OWP. OWP is not affiliated with any insurance provider, and program-affiliated mental health clinicians are not in contact with or responsible to any insurance or professional accreditation boards.

Neither the Oregon Medical Board nor the Oregon Nursing Board are notified if/when patients use OWP counseling services.

Q: Can I choose which provider I see?

A: Yes! Patients are encouraged to call 541-242-2805 or visit our Counseling page to find a provider that meets their needs.

Q: I’d prefer to speak with a provider outside of my area. Is that an option?

A: Yes. Patients are welcome to choose a provider within or outside of their immediate geographic region. Most OWP affiliated providers also offer telehealth appointments.

Q: Can I schedule an in-person appointment?

A: In many cases, patients will have the choice of in-person or telehealth appointments. This is left up to the discretion of each participating provider.

Q: Are appointments offered via telehealth?

A: Yes. Most OWP affiliated providers offer telehealth appointments. Visit our Counseling page to find availability and contact information for each program provider.

Q: Do I pay for my sessions through OWP?

A: Patients are entitled to eight complimentary sessions per calendar year through the OWP. Be sure to tell your preferred provider you are scheduling an appointment through the Oregon Wellness Program to ensure priority scheduling and to receive your complimentary sessions.

Q: If I like working with my provider, can I continue beyond the eight sessions?

A: Yes. If you choose to continue beyond the eight counseling sessions per calendar year, you and your provider will coordinate payment outside of OWP.

Q: If I want to switch providers, do my eight complimentary sessions start over?

A: No. Each patient is provided a total of eight complimentary sessions with OWP affiliated providers each calendar year. You may request or end care with a provider at your discretion.

Q: I’m a mental health provider, interested in offering my services through OWP. How can I learn more?

A: Thank you for your interest! Our team of dedicated providers make this work possible. Please contact [email protected] to learn how to get involved.
